Mahabaleshwar
is considered the queen of hill resorts in the State of
Maharashtra, which is popular with residents of Mumbai who
want to getaway for a weekend holiday. It has gained popularity
with holiday travellers from across the country and abroad.
Perched in the Sahyadri Mountains at a height of 1372 metres
(4500 ft), Mahabaleshwar offers stunning views of the green
valley of the Deccan, and of the Arabian Sea, on clear days.
It was once a colonial retreat of the Bombay Presidency,
during the days of the British Raj.
There
is much to see and do in Mahabaleshwar. There are over 30
popular vantage points, which offer scenic views of the
green valley and hills. These include Elphinstone Point,
Babington Point, Kate's Point, and Bombay Point. Arthur's
Seat, a spectacular viewpoint, located 12 km from Mahabaleshwar,
looks out over a precipitous drop of 600 metres. The beautiful
waterfalls are also worth visiting, the main ones being
Chinaman's, Dhobi, and Lingamala. Venna Lake offers fishing
and boating with the added attraction of wayside stalls
and horse riding. The historic Pratapgad Fort 24 km away
was built by the Maratha chieftain Chhatrapati Shivaji in
1656, to control the rebellious rulers of the nearby Javali
Basin. According to legend, Shivaji was blessed with a shining
sword at the temple of Goddess Bhawani located here. It
is also the site of the famous battle between Shivaji and
Afzal Khan, ruler of the Bijapur Sultanate.
While
away the hours at wayside coffee shops in the marketplace;
or sip coffee or fresh fruit juices at the roadside cafes.
Admire the seasonal flowers in the park, amble off on gentle
mountain ponies, and go for a boat ride on Venna Lake. Shop

enormous range of soft fruit like strawberry, raspberry
and mulberry from the surrounding Brahma Aranya forests.
